ACT NATURAL was my first band, almost frightening to think we played our first gig in the school hall in December 1980. The core was always me (guitar/backing vocals) Mark Hubbard (Bass) Steve Potter (Drums) and Rufus Thom (Vocals). Later we added keyboards courtesy of Mick Bolton and then Mark Ball.
The early stuff was predictably rough – in true punk style we formed the band before we owned any instruments, let alone learned to play them. Gradually it started to work. I’d say between 1986 and 1988 we had genuine prospects, a sizeable local following and industry interest. Sadly a combination of incompetence and bad luck put paid to that. I often wonder what some investment and a decent producer would have made of us.
